As most of us in the United States prepare to shelter in place during this crisis, our homes are now our place of not only safety and refuge, but also our place of praise and worship. We are no longer permitted to gather together as the body of Christ in our places of corporate worship due to various restrictions due to COVID-19. Therefore, I call on all Christians today to consecrate your homes to the Lord as both a place of safety and refuge, as well as a place of holy praise and worship.
According to Merriam-Webster, consecration simply means “to make or declare sacred, especially to devote irrevocably to the worship of God by a solemn ceremony.” Again, now that we have been restricted to our homes and unable to come together to worship corporately, our homes are now our church. As such, our prayer today is two-fold.
First, our prayer is to dedicate our homes as a holy place of worship to God. In II Chronicles 7:12-16, the Lord declares the following promise to King Solomon and the nation of Israel:
“Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.” (II Chronicles 7:12-16, NKJV)
Prayer: Father, we dedicate this home as a place of worship to You and only You. We humble ourselves before You, O’ Lord, and repent of any sin committed in this house and any unholy thing that we may have brought in. We humbly pray that Your blessing be upon our home and that your Spirit be absolutely free to move and operate as He so desires, both in this house and within those that live here.
Second, our prayer is for protection over our homes and families. We must follow the example of King David and make the following declaration before the Lord, knowing that His Word is everlasting and absolutely true:
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust. Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.’” (Psalm 91:1-16, NKJV)
Prayer: Father, we ask for protection over this house and stand on the promise of Your everlasting Word, as set forth in Psalm 91…we declare it over our home so that all may hear and know that you are the Living God. Set our love upon You, O’ Lord, and keep us dwelling in Your secret place…for You alone are our refuge and fortress…our Living God!
To accompany this two-fold prayer as a symbol of sanctification and holiness, anoint your doorpost with consecrated anointing oil, if you feel led to do so. This is not a requirement, but simply a preference. Many may not have anointing oil handy or feel comfortable doing this, and that is OK…you have already declared and prayed the Word of the Lord over your home, and that is enough for most.
In closing, I am convinced that this is the revival that we’ve been praying for, even though it doesn’t look like we thought it would! I also know that, in this time, Holy Spirit Himself is both shaking our day-to-day and dictating everything that is happening. Our homes are now our churches for most of us, if only for a short while, but you can be confident in knowing that your new ‘church’ has been dedicated to the Lord for His purpose and glory.
