“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6, NKJV)
Why does Jesus use both hunger and thirst when referring to righteousness? Both hunger and thirst are fundamental requirements for the sustainment of life. When we are hungry, we eat…when we are thirsty, we drink…thus sustaining life. The same goes for righteousness…a hunger and thirst for it leads to life and life more abundantly.
We also cannot ignore the fact that, as we feast upon righteousness and experience a more abundant life, holiness is nurtured within us and projected outward to others. What occurs here is the miraculous filling of the Spirit. In turn, this filling produces another dimension of life within us…a life of victory and power that greatly affects everyone we encounter, both directly and indirectly! As the Spirit continues to nurture and develop holiness within us, we begin to see the Lord more and more…what an abundant life indeed!
“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:” (Hebrews 12:14, NKJV)
