An Obedient Love

In today’s society, the concept of love is so distorted that it is becoming increasingly difficult to comprehend its true meaning.  A popular question these days is, “What does love mean to you?”, as if the very definition of love is dependent on us or our feelings/opinion.  Nothing could be farther from the truth!

In his letter to fellow believers, the Apostle John declared the following about love:

“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”  1 John 4:7-8, HCSB

This statement severely narrows the lens through which we should view love, and reveals the byproduct of this love…love for one another.  However, John did not stop there.  Further along in his letter, he declares the following:

“This is how we know that we love God’s children when we love God and obey His commands.  For this is what love for God is:  to keep His commands.”  1 John 5:2-3a, HCSB

Wow, there it is!  The cold hard truth is that our demonstration of love for God is directly connected to our obedience to His commands.  While the world outright refuses to accept this truth,  many within Christianity only accept part of it.  While many ‘Christians’ wholeheartedly accept that “God is love”, these same ‘Christians’ ignore the loving obedience that is required from us as a demonstration of our love for God.

Do you want to know something even sadder than this?  These same ‘Christians’ very seldom talk about the brutal, painful demonstration of love shown by God toward us through the sacrifice of His only Son–Jesus Christ.  This is the love story that the whole world needs to hear…NOW!  Only then will our society regain its proper view of love.
